Mobile Number Portability- A Classic Convenience

Switch Networks without changing Mobile Number!

Pakistan’s telecom industry growing at an average of 147 percent introduced a revolutionary and globally practiced concept of Mobile Number Portability (MNP) recently.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched Mobile Number Portability (MNP) from 26th March 2007; which gives mobile consumers the option to choose their mobile network without changing their phone numbers. In other words they can switch from one mobile phone operator to another without changing their cell numbers (even the dialing prefix). With the introduction of MNP, Pakistan’s telecom market has become more competitive as mobile operators have to come up with new strategies and better services to overcome the risk of network switching.

Successful adoption of MNP will bring convenience to users who were stuck to one operator because of their old numbers which were circulated within their social and business network. Keeping more than one SIMs has become a common practice among mobile users either for a better tariff plan or for reliable network connectivity & service. But now they can avail different network services without changing their numbers and using the best network to join in, at their ease anytime.

MNP service has created excitement in the mobile consumer market; however consumers response to MNP is still relatively low and market analysts are observing how consumers will react to this new service. On the other hand, MNP has created competition among mobile networks and networks have started gearing up their voice as well as data services offering to offer better services then competition. Recently, Pakistan passed the 52 Million subsriber base benchmark and with the introduction of MNP, it is expected that mobile operators market share will be effected. The growth may continue but mobile service providers will have to work hard to retain their customers!
